Kickball sour ale

4.1% ABV | 6 IBU

A pleasantly crisp and clean tart ale that’ll leave you smacking your lips while reaching for another sip. We designed this recipe using 2-row pilsner malt and wheat, with a light sprinkling of German hops.

So, how did this infamous beer get its name? That all goes back to 2019 when our head brewer, Jason, was trying to determine the protocols to brew such a beer. For those of you who may or may not be familiar with lactobacillus (one of the common bacteria used in brewing to make sour beer), it’s been known to linger in the crevices of brew houses, only to reappear and make itself known after it has unintentionally soured a clean batch of beer.

The particular spot we were concerned about becoming a home to our new guests was the steam exhaust port attached to our brew kettle, which happens to be the chamber we let the beer sit while it sours briefly. So, rather than take the risk of growing a culture of infectious sour bacteria in our brewery, Jason ingeniously grabbed a kickball from the local toy store, cut it open, and covered the opening to the steam exhaust.
